How does a drive shaft work?

Think of the driveshaft as a strong spinning bar that carries the engine’s twist from the gearbox to the wheels. The gearbox sets how fast it spins; the differential splits that twist so left and right wheels can turn at different speeds. Flexible joints at the ends (like “wrists”) let the shaft keep delivering power even while the suspension moves up and down, and, on front wheels, while they steer. In a front-wheel-drive car there are two short shafts to the front wheels; in a rear-wheel-drive car there’s usually one long shaft to the back axle, then short shafts to each rear wheel.

What happens if my drive shaft breaks while driving?

In most cases if this happens, you’ll suddenly lose drive. The engine still runs and revs, but the car stops pulling and you just coast. It’s usually noisy (bang/clunk) and can vibrate a lot, so get off the throttle, signal, and roll to a safe stop. Here’s what to do

  • Ease off the throttle; clutch in (manual) or select neutral (auto).
  • Steer to the shoulder, hazards on.
  • Do not try to drive further, you can cause major damage or lose fluid.

Where is the drive shaft on a car?

It really depends on your car. If it’s a small/ medium car, two short drive shafts (also called CV axles) sit behind the front wheels, one left and one right, running from the gearbox to each wheel. On vans, it’s usually one long tube that runs under the middle of the car from the gearbox to the rear differential, then two short half-shafts go to the rear wheels.

Look through the front wheel spokes: those ribbed “accordion” rubber sleeves are CV joint boots on the front drive shafts. Grease sprayed around the inner wheel/arch usually means a torn boot.

How to tell if the drive shaft is bad?

Common signs of a failing driveshaft/prop shaft include: a speed-specific vibration under load (often disappearing if you dip the clutch), clicking or knocking while turning (typically an outer CV joint), clunks on take-off or gear changes (worn universal joints), a constant squeak or hum at road speed, and persistent vibration from a worn centre bearing or imbalanced shaft; also look for split/leaking CV boots or excessive play in the shaft. These tend to worsen over time and can lead to loss of drive, so have it inspected promptly.

If noise/clicking on full lock or you notice some grease around a front wheel then you’d likely need to book “Front driveshaft/CV joint (left or right)” or “CV boot replacement” (say which side if you know it; side is from the driver’s seat). If you’re not sure, you can always book a diagnostic inspection where a professional mechanic can take a closer look at what’s going on and recommend the right repair.

What is a drive shaft joint constant velocity boot?

A drive shaft constant-velocity (CV) boot is the flexible, bellows-shaped rubber/thermoplastic cover that seals a CV joint on the driveshaft. It essentially does two jobs: keeps thick grease in (to lubricate the joint) and keeps water/dirt out while the suspension moves and wheels steer. Each CV joint (inner and outer on most FWD cars) has its own boot, held on with metal clamps.

If the boot splits, grease flings out and muck gets in. The joint then wears quickly and starts clicking on turns (front) or causing vibration and if this is left long enough, it can fail.

Can a drive shaft be replaced by a mobile mechanic?

Generally yes. On most cars a mobile mechanic can replace a driveshaft on your driveway, as long as access is reasonable and the fix doesn’t need heavy pressing or balancing gear.

By booking with a mobile mechanic, you can avoid the hassle of towing your vehicle to a garage and enjoy the flexibility of having the drive shaft repair done at your home or workplace. With ClickMechanic, we also offer free collection and delivery if the vehicle is drivable.

What does a Driveshaft do?

On rear-wheel drive (and all-wheel drive) cars the driveshaft transfers the power from the engine to rear wheels to be distributed over the two rear wheels. In some cars the driveshaft connects to a transaxle (a gearbox and differential mounted at the back of the car), but in most cars it transfers the power from the gearbox attached to the engine at the front to a differential at the back.

What does a drive shaft replacement involve?

  • The mechanic will jack the car safely.
  • The mechanic will inspect the drive shaft.
  • If necessary the mechanic will replace the faulty driveshaft
  • The mechanic will advise if other components need to be replaced.
  • The mechanic will re-check the drive assembly and test drive the car.
  • If necessary, the mechanic will make adjustments.

Can I do a drive shaft replacement myself?

Unless you are a qualified mechanic with the required skills, training and equipment to do the job, we strongly recommend a drive shaft replacement is only carried out by a professional mechanic. • When there is a squeaking noise coming from underneath or the back of the car.
  • When the car does not move at all.

How long does it take to replace a driveshaft?

A drive shaft replacement typically takes 1 hour, but can take less or more time. Ultimately, the time that the job will take depends on a range of factors. For example, your vehicle's make and model, year, as well as other factors. Select your car at the top of this page for information on job time and cost for your vehicle through ClickMechanic.

When should a drive shaft be replaced?

While the driveshaft itself is usually not prone to wear over time and there is no set lifespan, it can get damaged. Usually due to an accident or because the shaft was damaged will driving over a bump or through a pothole. In many cases like this the car becomes practically undriveable with severe knocking noises.

Addressing issues with the drive shaft timely and professionally is key to prevent further, more expensive, damage to the car. Should you experience problems with driveshaft then it is advisable to have it inspected and, if necessary, have the driveshaft replaced. Always service the driveshaft as and when stipulated in the guidelines set out by your car's manufacturer.

Can you drive with a broken drive shaft?

Is it dangerous to drive with a bad CV joint?

Is a drive shaft the same as a prop shaft?

A prop shaft is slghtly different from the drive shafts in that the prop shaft on rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicles transfers power from the engine and gearbox to the rear wheels. A drive shaft, on the other hand, transfers power to a wheel usually from a differential on the front or rear of the car.

Is a worn drive shaft an MOT failure?

Yes, a worn drive shaft can lead to an MOT failure if one its component checked during the MOT has an issue. For example, vehicles often fail their MOT on the CV joint section of the driveshaft, or indeed the CV boots.

What happens when your drive shaft goes out?

When your driveshaft goes out or fails you will hear a loud grinding or clunking noise as the driveshaft breaks. It can lead to the wheels no longer turning properly and a loss of control of the car. It will very likely also lead to further damage to the suspension and drivetrain.

It's important to get your driveshafts checked periodically and address any issues.

What causes a driveshaft to break?

A drive shaft must rotate extremely fast to do its job, so it must stay weighted down and balanced precisely. If the car is backed up into another object, the impact can disrupt this balance and cause the drive shaft to break. Sometimes even hitting a curb too abruptly can break the drive shaft.

Lack of lubrication can sometimes also cause damage to the driveshaft and its related components.

What is the average lifespan of a driveshaft?

You can usually expect it to last 70,000 miles or even the entire lifetime of a car in an ideal situation. How long the drive shaft lasts depends a lot on driving habits, vehicle modifications and other external factors.

How much does it cost to replace a drive shaft?

Prices for a drive shaft repair range from £170 to £340 with an average cost of £275. Ultimately, the cost of a driveshaft, also known as the prop shaft, replacement depends on your car and what parts your car's manufacturer recommends using for the replacement.
