Want to learn how we can help fix your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)?

ClickMechanic offers DPF regeneration and DPF cleaning services to help resolve Diesel Particulate Filter problems. We are also able to help with DPF replacements.

What does a Diesel Particulate Filter do?

A DPF filter is fitted to Diesel cars to clean up the exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. It is a part of the exhaust system and essentially looks like an exhaust silencer. The DPF cleans the exhaust gases by capturing and storing harmful exhaust soot. The soot stored is burned off periodically during an automatic regeneration cycle to empty the DPF.

What causes a Diesel Particulate Filter to get clogged up?

Under certain driving conditions or if there is a fault in the system the DPF will not regenerate, meaning that the soot is not burned off adequately. This, in turn, leads to a clogged up DPF. Usually, the system gets blocked in cases where the vehicle is primarily used for short trips or at low speeds, like stop-start traffic in cities. In those conditions, the system is unable to reach the conditions required to burn off the soot and clean the DPF.

How do you know the Diesel Particulate Filter is blocked?

There are a number of symptoms which could point to a blocked DPF:

  • The DPF warning light on the dashboard will come on
  • Car goes into ‘safe’ or ‘limp’ mode
  • Loss of power
  • High fuel consumption
  • Starting issues

Do I need DPF filter cleaning or a DPF regeneration?

If the Diesel particulate filter is blocked there are a few ways ClickMechanic can help. In some cases, a DPF regeneration can be carried out. The technician will go through the DPF history diagnostic and check that the filter has failed to complete a regeneration. If that is the case the mechanic will use diagnostic tools to force a regeneration cycle and run it through to completion.
If a DPF has become too clogged for a forced regeneration then a physical DPF deep clean of the system will be required to clear the soot. Specially designed fluids are added to the system, either through the intake or in some cases through the fuel to cleanse the unit. In some severe cases the DPF may need to be physically removed from the vehicle to wash through the filter, again using specific chemicals to do so.

When do I need a DPF replacement?

If DPF cleaning or a forced regeneration has not resolved the issues, a DPF replacement may be needed. The ClickMechanic mechanic in residence team can offer advice as to when a replacement should be considered.

Can I remove my DPF?

Whilst a DPF can be removed, it is not legal to drive a vehicle without one if there was one fitted to the vehicle by the manufacturer of the car. MOT testers will now fail any vehicle where there is evidence of an emissions filter having been removed from a vehicle and have been trained to make this decision from easily recognisable signs during the testing.

What does the Diesel Particulate Filter light mean?

Your car's internal computer will monitor the level of soot inside the DPF to determine if regeneration is needed. When the level of soot hits a certain threshold, about 45% blocked, then the engine will turn on passive regeneration. If that process is interrupted then the warning light will come on to encourage the driver to do active regeneration.

Is it safe to drive with the DPF warning light on?

The light first coming on is an advisory to use the active regeneration method. This means driving on a motorway for just half an hour. It should turn the light off and solve the soot issue for several weeks.

The sooty particulates will build up quickly causing more issues with your exhaust system, in some cases you may only have a week. The particulates are also extremely bad for the environment, with some of the particles directly responsible for acid rain. The drop in performance will be noticeable, and costly as you will need more fuel to run your car.

What happens if I don't replace my DPF?

Not cleaning the filter or fitting a new DPF when needed, will plug up the exhaust which in return will severely damage your engine, and essentially write off your car with expensive repairs. These exhaust problems could even ambush you while you drive, and cause a serious accident.

How to extend the lifetime of your DPF?

The best way to keep the diesel particulate filter clean and working is to take your car regularly for a drive on the motorway. Manufacturers developed a method to ‘regenerate’ the DPF by driving continuously on a motorway for 30 minutes. At this speed, the engine temperature is high enough to burn down and loosen any clumps of soot stuck in the DPF. This active regeneration and needs to happen every few months, especially if you are driving in an urban environment, where soot builds up more quickly.
