How does clutch fluid work?
In most manual cars, clutch fluid is actually the same type of fluid as brake fluid (usually DOT 3, 4, or 5.1), and it often shares the same reservoir as the brake system. In other vehicles, the clutch has its own separate reservoir, typically located on top of the clutch master cylinder.
Clutch fluid works as a hydraulic fluid, transferring the force from your foot on the clutch pedal to the clutch system. This pressure allows the clutch to disengage smoothly, so you can shift between gears.
It’s important to note that automatic cars don’t use clutch fluid, since they don’t have a manual clutch system - instead, they rely on transmission fluid and internal hydraulics to manage gear changes.
What does a clutch fluid change job involve?
It may vary from vehicle to vehicle but generally the mechanic will take the following steps to ensure your vehicle operates smoothly:
The mechanic will begin by checking the current level and condition of the clutch fluid to determine if a replacement is needed.
If the fluid is low or degraded, the mechanic will drain the old fluid and replace it with fresh clutch fluid as recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer.
Bleed the system – Air can enter the system during a fluid change, so the mechanic will bleed the clutch to remove any air bubbles and restore proper pressure.
The mechanic will thoroughly inspect the clutch system to make sure it’s functioning properly, ensuring smooth and efficient operation.
If any adjustments are necessary to ensure optimal clutch performance, the mechanic will take care of them to provide a smooth driving experience.
How do I know whether I need a clutch fluid change?
If your clutch isn’t feeling quite right, it could be time to check the fluid. Here are some common signs to watch out for:
- Clutch feels less responsive – If it’s harder to engage gears or the clutch feels slow to react, the fluid could be old or contaminated.
- Gear changes feel rough or gears slip – Difficulty shifting or slipping out of gear may be caused by low or degraded clutch fluid.
- Soft or spongy clutch pedal – If the pedal feels unusually soft or lacks resistance, it might be due to air or moisture in the fluid.
- Unusual noises when pressing the clutch – Grinding or squealing sounds can sometimes indicate clutch system issues, including fluid problems.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to have a mechanic inspect the clutch system and replace the fluid if needed.
Where is the clutch fluid reservoir?
The clutch fluid reservoir is usually located in the engine bay, towards the back on the driver’s side. It looks like a small plastic container with a cap and may have markings for minimum and maximum fluid levels.
In many cars, the clutch shares the same reservoir as the brake system. In others, there’s a separate reservoir mounted directly on top of the clutch master cylinder. If you’re unsure where to find it in your car, check your owner’s manual — it’ll include a diagram showing the exact location.
How often should I change my clutch fluid?
The general recommendation is that you replace your clutch fluid every 24 months or 24,000 miles — whichever comes first. Over time, the fluid can absorb moisture and become less effective, which can lead to spongy pedal feel, difficulty shifting, or even damage to the clutch system.
Sticking to regular fluid changes helps keep your clutch working smoothly and safely. Servicing with ClickMechanic will include top ups for brake fluid or clutch fluid.
Are brake fluid and clutch fluid the same?
Yes — in most manual cars, clutch fluid is the same as brake fluid. Both systems usually use DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid as the hydraulic fluid.
In many vehicles, the clutch and brake systems even share the same reservoir, making it easier to check and top up fluid levels. However, some cars have a separate clutch reservoir — check your owner’s manual to be sure!

Frequently asked questions about clutch fluid change & replacements
Read our answers to questions about clutch fluid change costs, symptoms and more.
What does Clutch Fluid do?
On most (manual) cars the 'clutch fluid' is the same as the brake fluid, that means that the fluid is also held in the same reservoir as the brake fluid. Changing the brake fluid means, in that case, that the clutch fluid is also renewed. Though some cars have a seperate reservoir on top of the clutch's master cylinder.
The clutch fluid essentially acts like an hydraulic fluid that transfers the pressure applied to the clutch paddle to the clutch to subsequently move it. Cars with an automatic transmission do not have a clutch and as such do not have clutch fluid.
When should you consider replacing the Clutch Fluid?
Over time, the clutch fluid (and as noted the brake fluid) can deteriorate due to internal wear to the components serviced by the fluid. Metallic particles will contaminate the fluid.
Servicing the fluid regularly is therefore key to ensure an extended working life. The fluid should be replaced as and when stipulated in the guidelines set out by your car's manufacturer.
Should you experience problems while engaging the clutch or if the fluid discoloured or leaked out of the system then it is advisable to have the system inspected and, should this be necessary, have the fluid replaced.
What happens during a Clutch Fluid replacement?
- Mechanic will inspect the fluid.
- If necessary the mechanic will replace the fluid.
- Mechanic will inspect the clutch system to ensure clutch operation is correct.
- If necessary, the mechanic will make any adjustments.
