How does an indicator light switch work?
The indicator light switch, often built into the steering-column stalk, is your command centre for signalling turns and lane changes. By flicking the stalk up or down, you complete an electrical circuit that sends power through the flasher relay to the bulbs on the left or right side of your vehicle. Many modern stalks also integrate headlight controls, so keeping this part in perfect order is vital for both safe signalling and proper lighting operation.
Inside the switch housing, a set of metal contacts sits just like a simple light switch in your home. When you move the stalk, those contacts meet and close the circuit, allowing current to flow and the corresponding indicator lamps to flash. The clicking you hear is the relay rapidly opening and closing the circuit, creating the familiar “wink” that warns other drivers of your intentions.
A properly functioning indicator switch is essential for safe driving. If your indicators don’t activate, won’t cancel, or only flash intermittently, the switch mechanism or its internal contacts may be worn. A mechanic can test the switch, the relay, and the wiring to pinpoint the cause and replace the faulty part if needed.
What does an indicator light switch replacement job involve?
When a mechanic replaces the indicator switch (also known as the indicator stalk), they follow a careful process to ensure everything is done safely, especially as this part is integrated into the steering column and often connected to the airbag system:
- The mechanic tests the indicators, hazard lights, and auto-cancel function to confirm the switch is the source of the problem rather than a relay, wiring fault, or bulb issue.
- Because the switch is located near the airbag system, the battery is disconnected to prevent accidental airbag deployment during the repair.
- The upper and lower steering column covers are removed, exposing the indicator switch assembly and its connectors.
- The mechanic unclips the electrical connectors and removes the indicator stalk or multi-function switch unit, depending on the vehicle design.
- A manufacturer-approved replacement switch is installed, ensuring the internal contacts, spring mechanism, and auto-cancel cam align correctly with the steering column.
- The column trims are refitted securely, and the battery is reconnected.
How do I know when I need an indicator light switch replacement?
Even a brief drive will reveal when your indicator switch is on its last legs. Watch for these tell-tale warning signs:
- Intermittent flashing that requires “jiggling” – The indicators only light or stay lit if you hold or wiggle the stalk just right, a clear sign of worn or broken internal contacts.
- Complete failure to signal – Neither left nor right indicators will operate at all, no matter how firmly you press or twist the stalk.
- One-sided operation – One direction may continue to work erratically long after the other has quit entirely.
- Sensitivity to moisture and temperature – Rain, damp conditions or extreme heat/cold can make the problem suddenly worse by allowing condensation into the switch housing.
- Vehicle-specific prevalence – Certain Peugeot and Citroën models are known to suffer from indicator switch issues more often than average. Many of these vehicles use a multi-function stalk assembly (often the COM2000 unit) that can develop worn contacts or intermittent connections over time.
If you find yourself constantly manipulating the stalk or discovering dead indicators on each journey, it’s time for a replacement.
Do LED indicator lights require a different switch?
Upgrading your vehicle’s turn signals to LEDs often prompts the question of whether the stalk-mounted indicator switch itself must be changed. In reality, the switch simply completes and breaks the circuit, and functions the same regardless of whether you’re using incandescent bulbs or LEDs. However, LEDs draw far less current than traditional bulbs, so a few other components in the signalling circuit often need attention to ensure proper flash rates and reliable operation:
Flasher Relay Compatibility – Most factory flasher relays are designed around the higher current draw of incandescent bulbs. When LEDs are fitted, the reduced load can cause hyper-flashing (rapid blinking) or no flashing at all. Swapping to an LED-compatible flasher relay solves this by correctly sensing the lower current draw and maintaining the standard flash rate.
Load Resistors – If an LED-specific relay isn’t available for your vehicle, adding inline load resistors mimics the electrical load of regular bulbs. While effective at restoring correct flash timing, resistors do dissipate heat and add complexity to the wiring harness.
LED-Integrated Switches – In specialist or custom applications, such as off-road vehicles, motorcycles, or show cars, switch assemblies with built-in LED indicators are available. These units are engineered for LED systems and can simplify installation, though they’re generally overkill for a standard car upgrade.
In short, you rarely need to replace the stalk switch itself when fitting LED indicators. Instead, the focus will be on ensuring the flasher relay or load-management solution is suited to LEDs.
How much does an indicator light switch replacement cost?
The cost of replacing an indicator light stalk varies considerably depending on your vehicle’s make, model, and the parts your manufacturer recommends. In the UK, you can generally expect to pay somewhere between £130 and £350 for a full replacement, with budget-friendly aftermarket switches starting around £16 for parts and labour at independent garages averaging £50–£80 per hour.
Luxury brands or main dealers may charge more, sometimes upwards of £285 for Mercedes-Benz or £339 for Peugeot, but you’ll often find significantly better value with qualified mobile mechanics or independent workshops. What does a ClickMechanic indicator light switch replacement quote cover?
Unless otherwise stated, the quote will cover:
- The cost of the indicator light switch(s)
- Coming to you
- Fitting of the parts
- Disposal of the old parts (unless you request to keep them)

Can a mobile mechanic replace the indicator light switch?
You don’t need to drive your car into a workshop just to have a faulty indicator stalk swapped out. Mobile mechanics arrive at your home or workplace with the same specialist tools and genuine or high-quality aftermarket parts that a brick-and-mortar garage would use. From safely isolating the battery to removing the steering-column shrouds, fitting the new switch, and carrying out full system checks, the entire job typically takes under an hour and can be completed wherever your vehicle is parked.

Frequently asked questions about indicator light switch replacement & repairs
Read our answers to questions about indicator light switch replacement costs, symptoms and more.
What does an indicator stalk do?
The vehicle's direction indicators are controlled by the driver using a steering column mounted indicator stalk. This multifunction part can often be part of the vehicle's headlight control as well, so it’s correct operation is critical. Depending on which way the stalk is moved, it will turn on the left or right indicator bulbs accordingly.
How does an indicator stalk work and what are the components?
At the base of the stalk are various electrical connections and they work in a similar way to a household light switch. Position the stalk in a certain way and the connection to that circuit is made and the system has a connected power circuit, thus illuminating the bulbs on that circuit. As these connections need to be clean and are reliant on the connectivity of the components, any ingress of dirt or wear of them can result in the unit not working.
How do you know something is wrong with the indicator stalk?
Issues are usually pretty apparent. When the stalk is used, the indicators fail to operate unless the stalk itself is manipulated to make the connections. Sometimes though, they fail to operate at all in either direction no matter what you try to do. This is a very common occurrence on Peugeot and Citroen models especially.
When should you consider replacing the indicator stalk?
As direction indicators are paramount to road safety, their correct operation is required by law. Therefore as soon as an issue arises, it needs to be rectified with immediate action.
How common is an indicator stalk replacement?
Most vehicles will go through their life without ever needing a replacement, however, as mentioned earlier, some models in the PSA group are susceptible to problematic stalks.
How can I extend the life of my indicator stalk?
There is little that can be done to prevent issues from occurring, however heavy handed operation will of course lead to issues.
What happens during an indicator stalk replacement?
Because the indicator stalks are usually steering column mounted, they are secured in place behind the steering wheel, which will require its removal. As the steering wheel will contain an airbag, this will need disarming prior to any replacement work.
- The mechanic will test the indicator stalk for its operation.
- Mechanic will ensure the electrical system is intact (fuses, wiring, bulbs etc).
- If the indicator stalk is confirmed as the issue, the mechanic will proceed with its replacement.
- Mechanic will disarm the steering wheel airbag, usually by means of either removing the SRS system fuse or by disconnecting the battery.
- The steering wheel airbag will be removed followed by the steering wheel itself
- The indicator stalk is replaced
- Mechanic will then re-assemble the parts and reconnect the SRS (airbag) system
- Mechanic will clear any SRS error codes and test the stalk
