Frequently asked questions about wiper linkage repair & replacements

Read our answers to questions about wiper linkage repair costs, symptoms and more.

What does a windscreen wiper linkage do?

The wiper linkage is what attaches the windscreen wiper motor to the wiper arms and blades.

What does a windscreen wiper linkage replacement involve?

  • The mechanic will inspect the windscreen wiper system.
  • The mechanic will carry out checks to determine the exact fault.
  • If necessary, the mechanic will replace the windscreen wiper linkage.
  • The mechanic will advise if any other parts need to be replaced.
  • The mechanic will test the windscreen's wiper system to ensure it works correctly.
  • If necessary, the mechanic will make adjustments.

Can I do a wiper linkage replacement myself?

Unless you are a qualified mechanic with the required skills, training and equipment to do the job, we strongly recommend a wiper linkage replacement is only carried out by a professional mechanic. ClickMechanic can help get you a vetted and local mechanic to carry out the work. Just enter your postcode and your car's registration number at the top of this page and select the work needed to get an instant fixed price up front.

How do you know if your wiper linkage is broken?

  • When you can hear the motor running but the arms are not moving
  • If the wiper arms get stuck in various points on the windscreen
  • When only one wiper arm moves

How long will a wiper linkage replacement take?

A wiper linkage replacement usually takes around 1 hour, but can take less or more time. Ultimately, the time that the job will take will depend on a number of factors, like your vehicle's make and model, year, as well as other factors. Select your car at the top of this page for information on job time and cost for your vehicle through ClickMechanic.

Can I still drive with a faulty wiper linkage?

It is a legal requirement to have working windscreen wipers, and is a dangerous defect. So it's important to get it fixed immediately.

How often should I replace a wiper linkage?

Due to the regular use of the components and the climate in the UK, wiper linkages often fail through wear and tear. If you suffer issues that point to a problem with the wiper linkage, like one of the symptoms listed, you will need to get this repaired immediately. It is a dangerous defect to have faulty windscreen wipers and also therefore a legal requirement.

How can I extend the life of my windscreen wiper linkage?

Obviously there is little you can do about wear and tear over the years, even with the following advice.

  • Don’t switch on the wiper system when the blades are frozen to the windscreen. This causes undue stress on the linkage and cause the joints to pop apart.
  • Similarly if the the vehicle hasn’t been used for a while, lifting off the wiper blades from the screen will unstick them and cause less stress on the linkage when you first use it
  • Always switch off the windscreen wipers before switching the engine off and leaving the car. This will ensure that they do not come on automatically the next time you start the engine (preventing the above scenarios) but also allows the wiper arms to be “parked” and not left at an unusual angle with which to start from. Again, this reduces the stress on the linkage.
  • Regular basic maintenance, such as lubricating the wiper motor linkage and replacing worn wiper blades all help with longevity of the linkage.

How much does it cost to replace wiper linkage?

On average a wiper linkage replacement costs around £85. Typical prices can range anywhere from £50 to £160. Ultimately, the cost depends on your car and what parts your car's manufacturer recommends using for the replacement. Find out what you could save by having your windscreen wiper motor replaced by ClickMechanic by selecting your car at the top of this page!

Is a broken wiper linkage an MOT failure?

Yes, a broken wiper linkage can cause an MOT failure. The wiper linkage consists of a series of rods and joints that connect the wiper motor to the wipers and if this fails, it may hamper the operation of the wipers resulting in an automatic MOT failure.

Is the wiper linkage checked during an MOT?

The wiper linkage itself are not specifically checked during an MOT. However, a broken wiper linkage will most likely cause the wipers to malfunction, the working of which is checked and tested by the MOT tester. Any sort of damage observed or improper operation of the wipers will definitely result in an MOT failure.

What causes a wiper linkage to break?

The most common reason for a broken wiper linkage is simply wear and tear. Over time, with exposure to the elements, the linkage can become corroded or damaged, and this in turn can cause it to bend. Other reasons for a broken wiper linkage include impact damage (from a collision or other accident) and manufacturing defects.
