“Premier Workshop came to collect our car for MOT and service and identified that the catalytic converter and sensors had been stolen from under our car. They sent us a useful video of the damage and as the repairs would cost more than the value of the car helped us to arrange scrappage from their garage ( very helpful as we have a new baby ) Communication was excellent and even though they had spent quite a bit of time collecting and inspecting the car, did not charge us the full fee, just a £40 'cancellation fee' which we though was very reasonable.”

What does a Power Steering Pump do?

The power steering system assists in making the steering wheel motion of a car lighter. Most power steering systems use hydraulics to make the steering lighter (although newer cars are increasingly fitted with electromechanical power steering).

An hydraulic system is powered by hydraulic fluid which is kept in a reservoir in the engine bay. As you turn the wheel the hydraulic system is activated; the power steering pump pushes hydraulic fluid through the system applying pressure on the gearset (usually a rack and pinion assembly) which in turn moves the wheels.

How do you know there is something wrong with the Power Steering Pump?

  • When power steering fluid is leaking from the system (transparent patches of fluid underneath the car).
  • The steering wheel is heavier to turn than normal.
  • When there is a squeaking noise when turning the wheel.

When should you consider a Power Steering Pump replacement?

Over time, the power steering system's components might leak due to worn seals or damage. It might just be a leaking pipe, but in some cases it can be that the power steering pump leaks. Usually the seals or hose connector leaks, but in some cases it might be that parts of the pump have corroded (for example due to liquid from other components leaking on it) causing fluid to leak.

If the power steering fluid level drops below a certain point, the system will lose its ability to assist in making the steering lighter. It is therefore important to address issues with the system timely and professionally to ensure an optimal and lighter steering experience.

Should you experience problems with the power steering then it is advisable to have the system inspected and, if necessary, have the leaking power steering pump replaced. Always service the power steering system as and when stipulated in the guidelines set out by your car's manufacturer.

What happens during a Power Steering Pump replacement?

  • The mechanic will inspect the power steering system and pump for any leaks.
  • If necessary, the mechanic will replace the leaking power steering pump.
  • The mechanic will advise if other components need to be replaced.
  • The mechanic will bleed the system and top up with new power steering fluid.
  • The mechanic will check the system again and test drive the car.
  • If necessary, the mechanic will make adjustments.
