The mechanic was punctual and very helpful. He took the car for a test drive and told me what wasn't wrong with it but couldn't tell what was wrong as his diagnostic tool wouldn't connect to the car as he didn't have the right adapter. Considering he should have had the car model information before his visit I found this omission disappointing. He did suggest a service would possibly clarify the fault.
