I used this platform to try to get a fault diagnosed with my Sons car (suspected contaminated fuel) at his University grounds. I nominated the following day (not a specific time) and got an automated booking with an outfit called Heathrow breakdown recovery for between 6:00 and 8:00 PM on the desired day and was charged £66.39.
We checked the feedback for the proposed mechanic and it looked very favourable, even if it didn't go back very far in time.
The mechanic called during the day and wanted to bring the time forward, but we couldn't meet the mechanic at the earlier time, so the mechanic put the booking back 24 hours which was frustrating.

He finally arrived at 10:30 the following night. Over 30 hours late.
The mechanic didn't have any tools with him.
The mechanic didn't have any diagnostic equipment with him. Not even so much as a torch.
He turned up in an old Lexus car with his friend with him, the only thing which demonstrated that he may have been a tradesman was that he had a yellow high vis jacket on.
The two of them used the LED lights on their phones to try and carry out an inspection.
He proceeded to start the car, listen to the engine then look into the expansion bottle, told my son that it had had some Radweld put into it at some point in the past, that the head gasket needed replacing but that it would probably be cheaper to put a new engine in it, and as luck would have it he had one to sell. But the most alarming thing he advised my son was that his best course of action was to scrap the car, and that they could take it away for him there and then and deal with it on his behalf.
The mechanic didn't ask any questions about any work that had been done recently (which should have been one of his first questions) and failed to notice the fact that the car has a new water pump and a new thermostat recently fitted, which should have led to questions about any other recent work to the cooling system, and could have quickly dispelled the Radweld theory because we had the system pressure tested at the same time.
We have subsequently received a quote from Heathrow breakdown recovery for £1452.60 via the ClickMechanic platform for replacement engine.
Having had the car transported to a reputable garage it turns out that the problem is actually electrical and that the car needs a new engine control unit (ECU). Not a new engine. Total cost is just a few hundred pounds.
All we wanted was a qualified mechanic who had all the correct tools, knowledge and diagnostic equipment to check things in more detail, such as a leak down test if he did suspect head gasket. However, the mechanic we got was unable and unwilling to do any of that.
I am very disappointed that ClickMechanic introduced us to a pair of grifters who see fit to pray on innocent people and their potential lack of knowledge of cars in order to try and extort either money, or the car, or both from them. In our instance they attempted to take the car from my son at what was nearly 11:00 PM at night having done absolutely no diagnostic work whatsoever.
I have made a complaint to the platform, but they advised that ClickMechanic is a third-party marketplace only. All the mechanics on their network are independent and are not employed by them. This means that any contracts of works, payment, warranty and ultimately any decision to refund, lies with the mechanic and not ClickMechanic, as the booking platform.
I suppose "buyer beware" still applies even if you think that by using a reputable platform someone is doing due diligence on your behalf, because our experience in this instance suggests that they are not.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

I apologise if you were not satisfied with service received.

I contacted your son multiple times and offered to even offered attend earlier however your son requested a late service because he was working.

The inspection we carried out included a diagnostic plug in which showed no faults because even your engine check light was not illuminated. A diagnostic plug in does not show faults which aren’t stored in your car’s ecu such as a blown head gasket.

We carried out the inspection to the best of our ability and spent a considerable amount of time on the vehicle, beyond what was paid for.

We never advised your son that we could take the car away there then as this was physically impossible as it wasn’t drivable and we didn’t have a tow truck on site as it wasn’t requested nor paid for.

What we actually advised him to do was to sleep on it and perhaps tow the car back to his parents house in Acton as it wasn’t going to be a simple fix and may take time, he would have to source parts which will take time too.

He mentioned his father was a rally car driver, so we suggested perhaps he could turn it into a project car.

At no point did we ask for any additional payments or to take the car away. We mentioned that he would need a recovery to wherever he would like to take the car and we could offer this service at a later date when he was ready.

We did not try to fleece him as you suggested. Now that you had the vehicle taken to a garage and realise the ecu was faulty, you should understand that a diagnostic plug in will not be able to read a faulty ecu.

Electrical problems require a lot of time to find and resolve. This was in line with our suggestion of taking it to a garage closer to his house in Acton.

I feel there has definitely been some miscommunication here as the person who has paid for the service was not present and the person who was present clearly misunderstood what we told him.

In any case, I’m glad you have resolved the issue and the car is fixed. The service you claim to have received is not a reflection of any other customer who we have dealt with all our years in business.

Once again if anything was said or done which you weren’t happy with I do apologise but I would like to reassure that the inspection carried out was within the guidelines suggested by click mechanic.

Many thanks

The mechanic communicated well, informed me the day before on the estimated time for collection and was very accommodating for where I was on shift. Work was carried out promptly and I was given updates on additional work that needed completing with an estimated timeline that was met.
