Gary R
I've been working on cars for 40 years in some shape or form. I started off with my father in his garage fixing cars and worked with him when I was 14 years old until i left school. I studied engineering at college and from there I worked in a motorbike shop/garage and eventually I worked at Central Tyres in Essex for a few years and then moved to a few other garages in order to gain a broader spectrum of skills and when I had that in my armoury I began my own business in 1996 and been working in it since. I am able to service all makes/models and tackle all types of repairs.

Dear Sir

In response to the money you have taken from my account for 'work' carried out on the above car.

I spoke to an advisor who quoted me £40 for the diagnostic and £123 to replace both gaskets. Only one was changed, which I already had. So I supplied the part.

Initially the mechanic Gary, was booled to turn up between 11.00 and 13.00 on Friday 12th June. He eventually turned up at 19.00. He was unable to remove the bolt but said he could use a sealant to fix it but didn't have it with him. He would do it on the Sunday.

At no time did the mechanic say how much it would cost in total.
I assumed that the diagnostic charge would include removing relevant parts to enable the bolt to be inspected. As he was unable to remove the bolt and would need to put the parts back together I assumed their would only be a small charge for the sealant and oil.

He rang to say he would be there at 13.00. My mum drove me over, and just after we got there he rang to say he was running late and it would be 15.00. At 15.45 mum had to drive home to care for my Nanna. At 17.30 hours he rang to say he wouldn't make it but would do it on Monday. My mum then had to drive over and collect me.

He rang Monday early evening to say he hadn't had the time but would do it first thing in the morning (Tuesday).

I received a phone call at 17.45 hours to say he had arrived. I asked him to ring me when it was ready. My mum drove me over at 21.30 and I drove the car home. After about 10 minutes the car was behaving strangely and the throttle was pulling back. After then it cut out on me at least 3 times due to the battery having been unnecessarily disconnected and removing various parameters on the car.

When I got home and checked under the bonnet he hadn't replaced the engine cover correctly and had managed to shear off a bolt resulting in the engine cover slipping down and lodging in front of and resting against the auxiliary belts and pulleys potentially causing a failure with the belts. Where the engine cover had been rubbing against the pulley it is now damaged caused from the friction to melt the plastic.

I now have an engine cover that needs replacing and a bolt that needs drilling out through no fault of my own. Not to mention the extra miles; 25 each way and the time wasted when he did not show.

I would like to know what you propose to do about this and also the money you have taken for a job that is a temporary fix..

I look forward to your reply. If I do not recieve a refund of the unauthorised payment by 12:30PM tomorrow, Saturday 20th, I will be contacting my bank.

Yours faithfully

Jonathan Rigby

Gary is a top man and did a sterling job - a little extra work cleaning after replacing the Slave cylinder on the VW Passat but it all works fine again. Good to be shown the faulty part I don’t recall many garages doing that & shows honesty..
