The mechanic didn't actually find the fault. I called out someone else who spotted it within a few moments. I've been charged 95 quid for not much.
Reply from Adrian:
I’m sorry you feel this way but I carried out the inspection which was required. You had no coolant in your reservoir which we filled with water temporarily. And advised you to drive the vehicle which you did and the heat came back. Then when you switched the Settings it went away again. I also advised you that this could be due to the thermostat, but due to you having very low coolant it could of got air into the cooling system, this is why I said to drive the vehicle and see if it improves as it is a self bleeding system.
