What is a fuel flap release fault diagnostic?
A large proportion of modern cars have a fuel filler cap, covered by a flap to make it more aesthetically pleasing as well as providing security. This flap is generally released only via an internal release button or a cable. When this fails to release the flap to allow the fuel tank to be refilled it is, of course, a major problem for the driver! The diagnostic will determine the cause of the fault, be it electronic, mechanical or cable.
How does a fuel flap release work and what are the components?
In its simplest form, the button that releases the flap sends a current to the solenoid that controls the lock position and opens it, allowing the flap to unlock and therefore springing it away from the body work.
How do you know there is something wrong with your fuel flap release?
It is pretty obvious when there is an issue, the fuel flap doesn’t open, so you cannot access the filler cap.
What happens during a fuel flap release fault diagnostic?
- The mechanic will test the operation of the release to see rif there is an obvious issue.
- They will then, depending on whether it is cable or electronic release, go through the system to locate the fault
- Once the fault is determined, the mechanic can then either rectify it, providing additional parts and labour are not required or give a quotation to fix the issue.
What does this diagnostic cover?
Unless otherwise stated, the quote for the diagnostic will cover;
- Coming to you
- Up to an hour with the vehicle
- Repairs that do not need parts or additional labour
- VAT (if applicable)
- 12 months parts and labour warranty

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
