Russell B
I did my apprenticeship at a garage in Swindon as I studied with Northstar College. After graduating I left and went to Charlie Browns auto services for 2-3 years. Following my time at Charlie Browns I went to work for Mr. Clutch for 3 years where I progressed from mechanic, to assistant manager, to store manager. After learning all I could from Mr. Clutch I decided to go self employed and also do mobile mechanic work, and I have been doing that for about 7-8 years now.

The guys were very friendly , they told me I must have destroyed the ECU and possibly a remaining 60 ECUs in the car and therefore condemned the drive battery when I exchanged the dead 12 v battery for a brand new one without disconnecting the drive battery and that therefore the car was basically a write off. Which was dreadfully alarming. But I know that isn't necessarily the problem, because it is perfectly possible to change the 12v battery without damaging anything having done it about 8 years ago when the first battery died, also I couldn't have caused the cascade of faults by changing the battery, as it was *because* of all the faults including one reporting low voltage from the 12volt battery, which I confirmed by measuring it, that convinced me that the 8 year old battery was badly in need of replacement, there's no way me replacing the battery could retrospectively cause the cascade of faults that caused me to change the battery, but I'm convinced a seriously depleted 12 volt battery could do exactly that.
Also I had left the battery cover in the boot unbolted, as I thought they might want to disconnect the battery to try to reset some of the faults, the cover is held down by 10 M6nuts which screw onto short M6 studs, I was concerned to see these tightened back down hard by the use of what appeared to be an electric torque wrench, I had the vehicle checked again by the AA, who could still see the cascade of faults present, and told me there were no extra ECUs, just more modules to the one. He recommended that I book the car into VW main dealer at Bath, & when I have, to ask the AA to take the vehicle there. He suggested I disconnect the 12v battery from the car to keep it charged for when it's taken to Bath. That's when I realised that most of the M6 studs had been seriously damaged, and will need replacing or possibly re cutting and new nuts. It was very difficult to remove the bolts as the threads were stripped, I wasn't going to leave a review until get the report From VW about the condition of the car, but since you asked here it is, I'll tell you how many stars I give the work once I see the VW report, and also decide what recommendation I would give at the same time, and change the stars if they were actually accurate after all

Good afternoon,

Your vehicle had a battery change by yourself and after this the vehicle would not move and has all the lights on the dash. As I explained at the time of the booking on hybrid vehicles you cannot replace the 12V battery without putting the hybrid battery into service mode or "disconnecting it" electronically. If you dont do this you *can* surge the system and cause damage through the databus wiring and control modules. Upon arriving the vehicle had about 60-70 codes relating to missing data message, low voltage, missing signal and short to earth. As the battery was reading 12.
5V I reset the fault codes in the vehicle looking for static or sporadic codes. The codes that was left (around 20-30) was all relating to short to earth and data missing Including Charging Module 2 which was short to earth. When testing for shorts I was getting a 11V feed through the earth verifying that there was a short to earth causing this issue. I advised that the charge control module has shorted and this will need to be replaced with a more in depth wiring loom inspection through all the canbus wiring due to the surge. I recommend the vehicle to be taken to Maindealer however advised that the repairs may out value the vehicle due to the nature of the damage. Read more
