Thomas & colleague were v good. I think their diagnosis was probably correct & the quotation to fix a new fuel filter seemed v reasonable. I have been in touch with Halfords since with a view to them fixing it - after failing on three separate occasions to make the car roadworthy - but their response has been completely unreasonable. (They wanted me to drive a unroadworthy car back to their garage and charge me for fixing a new fuel filter.)
I must now consider whether it is worth getting the fuel filter changed or to write off the car as scrap.

Thomas was friendly and professional over the telephone and kept me up to date at all times.
