What is an MOT?
An MOT test checks for a vehicle's compliance with the road and environmental safety standards. Car MOT testing is a legal requirement for vehicles that are at least 3 years past their first registration date.
An MOT test service is conducted by an MOT test station to ensure various components of a vehicle comply with the DVSA's minimum standards. If the vehicle passes the MOT test check then a new MOT test certificate is issued.
Why book a service at the same time as your MOT?
The MOT test service is different to getting a regular service as it does not check the general mechanical condition of your vehicle, which is why it's still essential to service your vehicle annually. However, at ClickMechanic you can save both time and money if you book your service and MOT test together. This is because mechanics can:
Undertake the service before the MOT, helping to spot any issues which may fail your MOT.
Complete all required maintenance work in one session, saving you time and preventing you from organising separate servicing and MOT appointments.
Book your MOT test for only £19 when you book a service at the same time!

Frequently asked questions about MOTs
When is my MOT due?
Your next MOT due date will be stated on your last MOT test certificate. If you do not have your last test certificate to hand, you can check when your MOT is due by going to https://www.clickmechanic.com/mot/when-is-my-mot-due and enter in your vehicle registration number. It will tell you when it is due.
How much is an MOT?
With ClickMechanic an MOT with collection & delivery costs £19 when booked together with a service (interim, full or major). When booked independently an MOT with collection & delivery through ClickMechanic costs £98. Pricing is the same regardless of location or type of vehicle.
How long does an MOT take?
Usually an MOT test takes on average around 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete. This goes for electric vehicles as well. During this time, a certified MOT tester will be able to check all the required points on the government sanctioned checklist.
What is checked on an MOT?
Safety-critical items such as lights, brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, seat-belts, mirrors, wipers, bodywork, VIN and (for petrol / diesel cars) emissions. It does not cover the engine, clutch or gearbox.
Can I drive my car if it fails the MOT?
Only if your previous MOT is still valid and the fail did not list a 'dangerous' defect. Otherwise it's illegal to drive except to a pre-booked repair or retest, fines can reach £2,500 plus points or a driving ban. However, note that the vehicle must meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times regardless.
If my car fails the MOT, how long do I have to fix it?
You can leave it at the test centre and return within 10 working days for a free partial retest. Take it for a retest within 10 working days and you'll pay only a partial fee; after that you’ll need a full retest and the full fee again.
My car is 3 years old, when do I need an MOT?
Book the first MOT by the third anniversary of its first registration (fourth in Northern Ireland). After that, it's every 12 months before the previous certificate expires.
If my car fails the MOT, can I take it somewhere else?
Yes, you may drive (or have the car recovered if needed) to another garage only for repairs or a pre-booked MOT, provided it's roadworthy and/or your old MOT is still valid. Be aware a different test centre will charge the full test fee again!
Is there a grace period for an MOT?
No. The certificate expires at midnight on the due date. To avoid gaps, you can renew up to one month minus a day early and keep the same renewal date for next year.
Can I get my MOT done early?
Yes, book it up to one month minus a day before it expires and keep the same renewal date for next year (e.g. if it runs out on 15 May, you can test from 16 April).
What happens if my car fails?
Your mechanic will share results of the MOT with you and provide a fixed-price quote for any repairs. Approve the work in the app and the mechanic will retest the vehicle for free once the issues are fixed.
What happens if I'm caught driving without an MOT certificate?
Police cameras can instantly see if your MOT has expired. If you’re stopped, you face an on-the-spot fine of up to £1000. Because an expired MOT usually invalidates your insurance, you could also be hit with a separate £300 fine and 6 penalty points for driving uninsured and in serious cases the car can be impounded or you can receive a driving ban. The only time you may drive without a valid MOT is directly to a pre-booked test or to have MOT-related repairs done.
Can you tax a car without an MOT?
No. When a vehicle needs an MOT, DVLA will not let you tax it unless the certificate is live on the database. Exempt vehicles (historic, electric vans registered pre-2015, etc.) can still be taxed because they do not require an MOT.
Do electric vehicles need an MOT?
Yes. EVs must have an MOT once they're over three years old (four in Northern Ireland), just like petrol or diesel cars. The check skips tail-pipe emissions and exhaust items but still covers brakes, tyres, suspension, lights, steering and other safety-critical parts. The fee is identical to a regular car MOT and you book it in exactly the same way.
