What does an Engine Oil Cooler do?
The oil cooler is a unit on the engine, usually between the engine and oil filter that has pipework through which the engine oil is sent. The coolant runs over these pipes to reduce the temperature of the oil. This helps with the longevity of the oil and that in turn reduces engine wear and emissions.
What happens if an Engine Oil Cooler fails?
Whilst it is rare that an oil cooler will physically fail, it can happen, especially if the correct mix of antifreeze with its rust inhibitor is not adhered to.
How do I know if an Engine Oil Cooler needs replacing?
Internal failure of the Engine Oil Cooler usually manifests itself in two ways. When the engine is off, the coolant can seep into the oil, creating a creamy like consistency to the engine oil. When the engine is running the oil system will pressurise and force the oil into the cooling system, with pretty much the same effect.
This is not always conclusive though as the symptoms are very like a head gasket failure so we would recommend that this is investigated by a trained mechanic prior to replacing the oil cooler.
So what needs to be done?
Once diagnosed as being faulty, the oil cooler unit will need to be replaced along with new gaskets.
What happens during an Engine Oil Cooler replacement?
The process may differ slightly between vehicles but generally the mechanic will do the following;
- The mechanic will check to confirm that the oil cooler requires replacement
- The coolant and oil will be drained
- The old oil cooler will be removed
- A new oil cooler installed
- Fresh coolant and oil + oil filter will be added
- Cooling system will have the air removed from it
- The mechanic will check that everything is back as it should be

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the engine oil cooler doesn’t require replacing?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle.
