What do suspension top mounts do?
Suspension top mounts, or strut mounts, have a number of roles to play. Firstly they provide the fixing link between the shock absorber and spring components and the vehicle’s body. In doing so, they also absorb some of the road noise and vibration as they are made with a rubber cushion.
On the front suspension, the top mounts also allow the struts to rotate as the wheels are steered, some being made with bearings to assist with this.
How do suspension top mounts work and what are the components?
Usually, suspension top mounts are like upturned saucers which have 3 or 4 bolts that fit through holes in the bodywork. There is a hole in the middle of the top mount, though which the shock absorber is fed through and secured.
In essence there is little else than that, some have bearings within them as previously mentioned, however none of the versions require any maintenance nor can be easily accessed once the suspension is bolted into place.
Typical symptoms that require suspension top mounts to be replaced.
It isn’t easy to distinguish when a top mount has worn out, but sometimes you can detect a knocking or rattle from the area or maybe a creaking when steering. However these are not 100% sure signs that one needs replacing as other components can cause the same symptoms. It is best to have a technician check first unless you have been advised already.
What happens during a suspension top mount replacement?
Changing suspension top mounts is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Raise the vehicle from the ground
- Check the operation of the top mounts
- Proceed to replacing it/them if required
- Bolt everything back together and reset the operation

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the alternator doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
