What is an MOT test?
Any car or van over three years old* is legally required to have a condition check carried out by an official MOT tester.
This test is carried out at fixed premises garages that have a dedicated MOT bay and a qualified tester.
*Four years old in Northern Ireland
What is checked during an MOT test?
There is an extensive list of individual checks that the vehicle being tested must pass. It covers the condition of the body, structural points, lighting and the security and operation of trim components. It also covers the powertrain, including the emissions and the braking system through to the tyres. Basically, it covers everything except the actual condition of the engine (except for the emissions), clutch and transmission!
What happens if my vehicle fails the MOT test?
Should your vehicle fail the test, it will be issued with a VT30 certificate indicating the reasons for the failure.
Dangerous faults
If there is an issue that the tester deems as a dangerous one, you will not be able to drive it away from the centre. If you drive the vehicle, you can be fined up to £2500, receive a driving ban or get at least three points on your license. It will also invalidate your insurance.
Major faults
With major faults, as long as the vehicle is still roadworthy and the previous MOT hasn’t expired, then you can drive it away.
When is my MOT test due?
If you do not have your last test certificate to hand, simply go to https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ and enter in your vehicle registration mark. It will tell you when it was due (and also enable you to view its recent MOT history as well).

What does the MOT with collection and delivery cover??
- Collection of the vehicle from your location
- The MOT test fee

FAQ’s
My vehicle’s MOT has expired, can you still collect it?
Yes, the mechanic will pre-book the MOT centre date and time and it is legal for them to drive it to the garage it is booked for.
There is no insurance on my vehicle, can you still collect and deliver it back?
This is not always possible, you need to alert us to this issue when booking so we can warn the mechanics who may wish to take it on under their insurance temporarily. If your vehicle has insurance, then the road risk policy of the technician will cover it anyway.
What if my vehicle isn’t roadworthy?
If you know the vehicle to be in an unroadworthy condition, do not book it for an MOT, it needs to be repaired prior to being driven to the test centre.
What happens if the mechanic turns up and finds my vehicle is unroadworthy?
This can happen inadvertently of course. However, the mechanic will need to quote you for the repairs and parts required to make it roadworthy and you will be charged a diagnostic call out fee. Examples of this are dangerously worn tyres, obvious corrosion, faulty brakes etc.
