What does a brake master cylinder do?
The brake master cylinder is used to create pressure in the brake hydraulic system, forcing the brake caliper piston to move out and apply the brakes.
How does a brake master cylinder work and what are the components?
When you apply pressure to the brake pedal it forces the piston inside the cylinder to pressurise the brake hydraulic system. This pressure then transfers down the brake pipes and hoses to the brake caliper and forces the piston out the other end - and pushes the brake pads into the brake discs and slows the wheels.
In its simplest form, putting your foot on the brakes is like plunging the handle on a bicycle pump. Push the handle down and it creates pressure at the other end!
Inside the cylinder is a rod with a piston on the end that either has a rubber cup on it or a rubber sealing band around it. The brakes lines are then screwed into the unit so they are sealed. This rod protrudes from the other end of the cylinder and is pushed in by the brake pedal as you push down on it. That is basically it!
Typical symptoms that require a brake master cylinder to be replaced.
- When the brake pedal feels soft under braking and continues to the floor without pressure.
What happens during a brake master cylinder replacement?
Changing a brake master cylinder is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
* Inspect the brake system.
* Check the brake master cylinder to establish if it should be replaced.
* If necessary, replace the brake master cylinder.
* Renew the brake fluid.
* Bleed the brake system.
* Inspect the brake system and will, if deemed safe, do a test drive.

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the brake master cylinder doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
