What does a bonnet release cable do?
The bonnet release cable enables a person to release the catch/lock on the bonnet so it can be opened to allow access into the engine bay.
How does a bonnet release cable work and what are the components?
In its simplest form, the release cable is encased in a protective sheath that when pulled, operates a lever on the bonnet catch to unhook the bonnet from its secured position. Some vehicles use more than one cable section, but the majority have one.
Please note this is different from the key/lock mechanism used on some Fords and the Audi A2 for example.
Typical symptoms that require a bonnet cable to be replaced.
It is pretty obvious when there is an issue, the bonnet fails to pop open when the handle is pulled. If the hand feels pretty loose and doesn’t spring back into place after being pulled, the likely cause is the cable being broken or at least, unclipped.
What happens during a bonnet release cable replacement?
- If the bonnet is shut and cannot be opened with the cable, the mechanic will need to access the catch from underneath the vehicle. The time taken to do this depends on the vehicle and of course how easy the catch is to manoeuvre.
- Once the boost is open, the mechanic will unclip the remnants of the old cable and replace with the new one.
- The mechanic will lubricate the catch and ensure correct operation of the mechanism

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the bonnet release cable doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
