What is a folding roof fault diagnostic?
More and more convertible vehicles are now equipped with electronically controlled systems for folding down and up the roof. Due to their infrequent use for periods of time, they can often jam up and fail to operate correctly. As there are numerous parts that have to work correctly in unison, it is almost impossible to tell what is causing the issue(s) without having the technician with the vehicle.
How does a folding roof work and what are the components?
Electrically operated folding roofs are controlled by the driver (or passenger!) via electric position switches inside the vehicle. Once activated, the roof mechanism and body panels are manoeuvreed into position by a series of electric motors. When the relevant panel has met its destination it triggers a position sensor to either cease the operation if it has come to an end or trigger the next sequence of events.
As each operation is dependent on the other, it only takes one motor, or one position sensor issue to bring a halt to proceedings, often leaving the roof either half way down or half way depending on what you were trying to achieve.
How do you know there is something wrong with your folding roof?
It is pretty obvious when there is an issue, the roof either not operating at all or failing to fully open or close.
What happens during a folding roof fault diagnostic?
*The mechanic will, where possible, use diagnostics to see if there are any indicators toward the problem
* They will then try to physically manipulate the roof open/closed.
* Once some movement is achieved, the usual method is to clean and lubricate the mechanism as you go until the full range of movement is possible.
* The next steps are dedicated by the success of the first steps and only the mechanic will be able to determine what that may be from their attempts to get the system moving

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
