Mobile Repair? Yes in most cases

What does a timing chain do?
The timing chain is used to rotate the camshafts at the correct time with the pistons, hence “timing chain”.
How does a timing chain work and what are the components?
The timing chain has a specific number of links that are matched in perfect harmony with the cog on the crankshaft and the cogs on the camshaft(s). This is set to rotate the camshaft so the valves open at the precise time they are meant to in correlation with the rise and fall of the engine's pistons.
The timing chain is usually held in place by a tensioner and and at least one guide.
The timing chain is integral to the engine and is hidden from view and protected by a cover with a gasket.
There are no engines made that have a water pump where there is a chain set up, unlike a timing belt, so there is no consideration for its replacement required at the same time.
Typical symptoms that require a timing chain to be replaced.
There are a number of issues that can arise, which are caused by the guides wearing or the chain stretching (or both!). You can start to suffer one or more of the following symptoms;
- Rattles from the engine on cold starting
- Continuous rattles as the engine speed increases
- Engine warning lights
- Difficulty in starting
What happens during a timing chain replacement?
There are many different processes required depending on the engine manufacturer, some of which may include all of the following or just some
- Mechanic will drain the cooling system and engine oil
- Engine and transmission will be removed from the vehicle (Mercedes & BMW mainly)
- Timing chain covers will be removed
- Sump pan and rocker covers will be removed
- Timing chain, tensioner and guides will be removed and replaced
- Camshaft sprockets are replaced if required
- Covers and sump pan will be refitted with new gasket(s)
- Engine and transmission will be refitted
- Engine oil will be replenished along with a new filter
- Cooling system will be refilled and bled
- The mechanic will then go through the engine start up procedure and test the engine
- Finally, the mechanic will road test the vehicle and check. clear the error codes prior to handing the vehicle back

FAQ’s
What is included in the timing chain kit?
In most cases, the timing chain kit comprises of the chain(s), the guide(s) and the tensioner(s). All of these parts are included in the quote.
Can the work be carried out mobile?
In most cases, the work can be carried out mobile, but it depends on the vehicle. Some, like Mercedes and BMW, need the engine and transmission to be removed as it is the only way to access the tensioner and chain parts.
Will the cogs and or VVT dephaser cog be replaced?
If your vehicle model has a history of requiring this, we will automatically quote for its addition. The quote will clearly state whether they are required and included or not.
Do you need to change the oil?
Wherever there is invasive engine work that could result in any debris entering into the oil, then an oil change will be required. Therefore we always include it and no mechanic would take the job on without doing it.
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the timing chain doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
