What does a pressure sensor glow plug do?
Glow plugs equipped with a pressure sensor measures the level of pressure in the combustion chamber and feeds this back to the engine ECU. The ECU then uses this data to micromanage the fuelling in order to reduce the emissions from the engine.
What happens if a pressure sensor glow plug fails?
When a pressure sensor glow plug fails it will normally bring the engine management light on and in some cases the glow plug active warning light may also come on or flash.
Generally though, the engine will continue to start and run without any major issue, however you may notice an increase in fuel consumption and of course, with an engine light illuminated the car will automatically fail it’s next MOT.
How do I know if a pressure sensor glow plug needs replacing?
You can only be certain that a pressure sensor glow plug is the cause of the engine management light through professional diagnostics. Home code readers do not normally have the accuracy to determine these types of errors as they are only accurate for generic error codes and not vehicle specific ones.
So what needs to be done?
Once the fault has been identified along with which of the glow plugs has failed, it needs to be replaced with a new unit. Some engines are equipped with a pressure sensor glow plug for each cylinder, some have two and a handful have only one. This is why it is important to have the fault professionally diagnosed as these units are expensive and are not generally replaced as a complete set.
What happens during a pressure sensor glow plug replacement?
The process may differ slightly between vehicles but generally the mechanic will do the following;
- The mechanic will check to confirm which pressure sensor glow plug requires replacement
- Careful extraction of the failed glow plug will be carried out*
- A new pressure sensor glow plug will be installed
- Error codes will then be cleared and system tested

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that a pressure sensor glow plug doesn’t require replacing?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle.
