What does a gear linkage do?
Gear linkage or cables transfer the movement of the gearstick into corresponding action of the gearbox selectors in order to change gear.
How does a gear linkage work and what are the components?
In the majority of cases, especially front wheel drive models, the linkage comprises of two cables to operate the selector levers depending on where the gearstick is being moved to.
The cables will either pull or push the levers on the top of the gearbox to change the position of the gears inside the gearbox so that the input speed is adjusted to the desired output speed of the wheels in relation to the engine speed.
Typical symptoms that require a gear linkage replacement replacement.
The most common scenario is that all of a sudden the geartick has no resistance and doesn’t do anything. This is because one or both of the cables has either snapped or come uncoupled at one end.
When this occurs, there is no alternative other than to replace the cable as even if it has popped out of the ball joint connection on the lever, it will do so again pretty quickly.
In some cases, the gear shift becomes very stiff. This can occur when a vehicle has been left for some time and condensation in the cable casing has caused the steel cables to form rust. In other cases, the lever arms and their bushes have become dry, or brittle making the gears hard to engage.
What happens during a gear linkage change?
There are many different processes required depending on the manufacturer, some of which may include all the following or just some
The mechanic will
* Test the gear lever movement to check that this is the correct repair
* Raise the vehicle and access the gearbox end of the cable.
* Chances are they may also need to remove some internal trim to access under the gear stick lever for the other end as well
* Remove the faulty cable and replace with a new one
* Re-test the gear stick movement

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the gear linkage doesn’t require replacing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
