What does a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) do?
A flywheel provides the surface which the clutch adheres to in order to transfer the rotating force of the engine through into the gearbox and ultimately the wheels.
Traditionally, flywheels were a single solid metal disc, however with the introduction of higher torque diesel engines and less refined and smaller engines (such as 2 and three cylinder ones), the need to reduce the vibration caused by the engine being transferred through the car required a solution. Hence the DMF was introduced, which is in essence two solid flywheels with dampening springs in between.
How does a DMF work and what are the components?
A dual mass flywheel works in the same way as a conventional flywheel inasmuch as the clutch friction plates press against it in order to take up the turning force. However, this contact plate is attached to the second plate with springs that soak up the vibrations.
Typical symptoms that require a DMF to be replaced.
Dual mass flywheels by their very design have introduced a number of issues that their single plate predecessors never had. Firstly, the springs that are in between the plates can become weak over time and even break from the very vibrations they are there to suppress.
You can often hear the broken springs rattle as you change gear and start to feel vibrations through the clutch pedal.
What happens during a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) replacement?
Changing a DMF is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do, however on larger engined vehicles, those over 1600cc, they are best done in the workshop.
When a flywheel is replaced a new clutch will also be installed at the same time, so it matches up with the unit and doesn’t damage it.
.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
Assess the operation of the clutch mechanism
Remove the faulty unit and replace with a new flywheel and clutch kit.
Re-test the operation of the clutch mechanism.
What does this repair cover?
Unless otherwise stated, the quote for your flywheel to be replaced will cover;

FAQ’s
Do I have to have the clutch replaced as well?
Even if the clutch isn’t slipping, it isn’t worth refitting the old clutch back in. Also, the clutch needs to match the new flywheel and any uneven wear on the existing clutch will cause additional vibration and can easily damage the new flywheel.
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
