What does a power steering pump do?
The power steering pump is either an electric motor pump or a mechanically driven pump that pressurises the hydraulic fluid for the power assisted steering rack.
How does a power steering pump work and what are the components
Both types of units use an impeller to draw the hydraulic fluid in from the low pressure return pipe and force it down the high pressure pipe. There are no serviceable items within the pump itself and it is replaced as a unit.
Typical symptoms that require a power steering pump to be replaced.
- When power steering fluid is leaking from the pump unit.
- The steering wheel is heavier to turn than normal.
- When there is a squeaking or grinding noise from the unit when turning the wheel.
What happens during a power steering pump replacement?
Changing power steering pumps is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Check the operation of the power steering pump if it needs to be replaced
- Undo the power steering pipe unions attached to the pump
- Drain the power steering fluid from the pump
- Remove the power steering pump and replace it with the new unit
- Put everything back together
- Refill the PAS fluid and bleed the system
- Start the car and test the steering

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the power steering pump doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
