A full service is usually carried out every two years with an interim service inbetween. This is generally carried out in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
As a general rule, the first service is usually an interim one, then a full, then an interim, then a major before the cycle is repeated.
Traditionally, servicing was carried out at 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever came first. However, more and more vehicles are going over to flexible service patterns where the vehicle will advise you through the dashboard display when a service is due and also which one.
This is fine, but in reality you should check your owners handbook for the vehicle and follow the advice it gives. If this isn’t available, you are best to revert to the 12 months or 12,000 miles tradition.
Whilst there are manufacturer or even model specific requirements at certain mileages (i.e. timing belt replacement intervals), these are the following service items replaced and the maintenance checks carried out.
Check timing belt replacement interval
Check for damage to bodywork, lights and trim
Check condition and operation of all seat belts
Check operation of interior and exterior lights
Check operation of ABS and air bag warning lights
Check windscreen washers and wipers
Check air conditioning operation including bad odour
Check operation of suspension dampers
Lubricate all door hinges, locks, and bonnet catches
Check fuel cap
Check cooling system including fan operation
Check and record antifreeze protection
Check and record brake fluid condition
Check power steering operation and fluid condition
Check and top up all under bonnet fluid levels
Check all auxiliary drive belts (not timing belt)
Check engine breather system
Check vacuum pipes
Check throttle body
Check battery level and grease terminals
Check condition of spark plugs (petrol only)
Replace air filter
Change oil, filter and fit new sump plug washer
Check fuel lines and brake pipes
Check the condition and security of the exhaust
Check all steering and suspension joints, mountings and gaiters
Carry out tyre report
Check all wheel bearings for excessive ‘play’ and noise
Check CV gaiters and joints for wear or splits
Check operation and condition of disc brakes
Carry out brake report
Check and top up axle and transfer box oil levels
Check and top up gearbox oil level
Check clutch cable/cylinder
Grease all greasing points
Check rear drum brakes
Torque wheel nuts/studs / Locking wheel nut key location
Road test vehicle and report any findings
Re-check engine oil level
Ensure all upholstery, gear lever, steering wheel, etc are clean

Yes, but this would depend on the individual mechanic. When making a booking through our site please leave a note telling us you need your service book stamped. We will verify with the mechanics on our network in your area before assigning a mechanic.
Currently the mechanics on our network would carry a stamp with them bearing details only of themselves.
Some manufacturers, like Mercedes, will have digital service records where information on all the services a (recent) car has ever had will be stored. Normally, digital service records will only be available to official dealerships and registered independent centres and mechanics.
Whether a mechanic is able to update digital service records will depend on whether they have access, or can get access to the digital service records. We advise to send us a message before booking, we will verify with the mechanics on our network in your area.
