Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement
Typical Cost: Medium
Mobile Repair? Yes
Typical Lead Time: 24 - 48 hours depending on part availability
What does the mass air flow meter do?
The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is used to determine the flow rate of air entering into the intake system.
How does a mass air flow meter work and what are the components?
There are two types of mass airflow sensors that are commonly used by manufacturers, a cane meter and a hot wire version. On basic versions, there are three wires that are used, one reports back the a signal of the air mass and one of the air temperature (and one feed wire). This information is then used with the information being fed back by lambda sensors to make corrections to the fueling of the engine and make it more efficient.
Typical symptoms that require a mass air flow sensor to be replaced.
You may experience some or a number of the following;
- When the 'Check Engine' light on your dashboard is on (EML)
- When the engine won't start or cuts out during operation.
- When the engine runs rough (a rough idle for example).
- When the engine doesn't perform as well as usual.
- When the car's fuel consumption is higher than usual.
What happens during a mass air flow sensor replacement?
Changing brake pads is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Assess the situation by reading the diagnostic codes and checking live data
- Once confirmed that the mass air flow sensor is faulty, continue on to replacing it.
- Once replaced, start the engine and recheck the error codes
What does this repair cover?

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the mass air flow sensor doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
