What does an oil sump pan do?
The engine oil sump is the collection point for the oil being returned from around the engine, so it can be pumped back round again.
How does an oil sump pan work and what are the components?
The engine oil sump is bolted to the bottom of the engine block as the lowest point of the unit. There is either usually a gasket or sealant to prevent the oil seeping out of the join.
The sump will have a sump plug in it, that allows easy access for the oil to be drained out and some engines also have an oil level sensor in them as well.
The design of the sump may have internal cells and plates to prevent the oil from moving about under the g forces of the car's direction and ensure that the oil strainer pickup for the pump is always emerged.
Typical symptoms that require an oil sump pan to be replaced.
- You have a sudden loss of oil pressure (with associated oil pressure warning light).
- You notice a large patch of oil under the engine
- After hitting something in the road, the low oil pressure warning light comes on
- The oil sump plug has been cross threaded

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the oil sump pan doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
