What does the oil pan sump gasket do?
The sump gasket forms the seal between the bottom of the engine block and sump pan.
How does the oil sump pan gasket work and what are the components?
Quite simply, the oil sump gasket is a basic seal made from various materials according to the requirements of the manufacturer that is held in place by the rocker cover and its associated bolts.
On some vehicles, the gasket is actually a sealant, rather than a physical part.
Typical symptoms that require an oil sump pan gasket to be replaced.
As the component is simple, there are only a couple of points to look for;
- Oil seeping out between the oil sump and the cylinder block.
- Patches of oil under the car (if no engine undertray fitted)
What happens during an oil sump pan gasket replacement?
Changing an oil sump pan gasket is a routine repair for all mechanics but may require the vehicle to be in the workshop on a ramp.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Raise the vehicle to allow access underneath.
- Inspect the oil sump and the gasket.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the sump pan.
- Clean the surfaces of the components.
- Fit a new sump gasket or in some cases, new sealant will be applied.
- Advise if any other parts need to be replaced.
- Refit the sump and put new oil and a new oil filter in.
- Run the engine and check for any leaks.

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the oil sump pan gasket doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
