What does an oil pump do?
The engine oil pump distributes the oil around channels in the engine to provide lubrication for the surfaces of the bearings, pistons and camshafts etc. It also aids with cooling the engine by circulating the oil.
How does the oil pump work and what are the components
Oil pumps are usually mounted low down in the soil sump on an engine. They have a fine mesh strainer and are operated by gears, gerotor mechanism or via vanes. Gears being the most common one on car engines.
The oil is picked up from the sump, through the strainer, then sent through the various channels in the engine's construction by the pump's pressure.
Typical symptoms that require an oil pump to be replaced.
As you are unable to physically see the pump, you are reliant on the oil pressure warning system on your car.
- If you see a red warning light on your dashboard with an oil can symbol in it
- You are alerted to it by a mechanic running diagnostics
What happens during an oil pump replacement?
Changing an oil pump is not a routine repair. The vehicle would most likely be required to be in a workshop so it can be worked on whilst on a ramp.
Unless a full diagnostic has been done before the mechanic will run the engine and check the oil pressure readings
- The vehicle will be raised
- The mechanic will drain the oil
- The oil sump pan will be removed
- Mechanic replaces the pump
- The components are re-assembled
- Fresh engine oil and a new filter are fitted
- The engine is then run, the pressures checked and the engine checked for leaks
What does this repair cover?

- The cost of the oil pump and assembly parts
- Coming to you
- Fitting of the parts

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the oil pump doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
