What does an engine mount do?
An engine mount is the connection link from the engine to the vehicles chassis or body shell.
How does the engine mount work and what are the components?
An engine mount usually consists of a combination of rubber and metal components. The metal part(s) are bolted to the engine and the vehicle's body and the rubber in between provides the absorption of the vibrations from the engine and protection the other way from the shock and jarring from the road.
Some cars have hydraulic engine mounts that variably absorb the vibrations from the engine according to the intensity of the vibrations.
Typical symptoms that require an engine mount to be replaced.
- When the engine vibrates more than usual.
- When there is knocking noises coming from the engine bay.
- When the car vibrates whilst driving (under acceleration or, going uphill).
- When a mount leaks, provided the mounts are hydraulic mounts.
What happens during an engine mount replacement?
Changing an engine mount is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Inspect the chassis and its mounting points.
- If necessary, replace the damaged or worn engine mount.
- Advise if any other parts need to be replaced.

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the engine mount doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
