What does a headlight bulb do?
Vehicles generally have two or four headlight units at the front of the car. The light units are either illuminated by a single double element bulb or a bulb for dipped and a bulb for high beam. They are high intensity bulbs that provide light in front of the vehicle for the driver.
How does a headlight bulb work and what are the components?
Headlights come on once the circuit is connected by the driver using the light control talk or switch. Whilst there are a few variations of bulbs, single filament though to HID (High Intensity gas-Discharge), they are all powered initially in the same way.
The driver then swaps between the high beam (the most powerful) and low beam setting so as not to dazzle oncoming road users.
Typical symptoms that require a headlight bulb to be replaced.
- The most obvious indication is a lack of visibility in the dark.
- You only see the reflection of one light where there would normally be two.
- You are warned by other road users, friends or even the police!
- You are advised when a service is carried out.
- The vehicle fails its MOT on a faulty light.
What happens during a headlight bulb replacement?
Changing headlight bulbs is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Inspect the headlamp system, socket and corresponding wires.
- If necessary, replace the faulty light bulb.
- Advise if any other parts need to be replaced.
- Test the light(s) again to ensure the lights function properly.

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the headlight bulb doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
