What does a windscreen wiper stalk do?
The vehicle's windscreen wash/wipe functions are controlled by the driver using a steering column mounted windscreen wiper stalk. This is a multifunction part, so it’s correct operation is critical.
How does a windscreen wiper stalk work and what are the components?
At the base of the stalk are various electrical connections and they work in a similar way to a household light switch. Position the stalk in a certain way and the connection to that circuit is made and the system has a connected power circuit, thus either turning the washer jets on, the wipers on and of course the speed at which they operate. As these connections need to be clean and are reliant on the connectivity of the components, any ingress of dirt or wear of them can result in the unit not working.
Typical symptoms that require windscreen wiper stalk to be replaced.
Issues are usually pretty apparent. When the stalk is used, the wipers and or jets fail to operate unless the stalk itself is manipulated to make the connections. Sometimes though, they fail to operate at all for any function no matter what you try to do. This is a very common occurrence on Peugeot and Citroen models especially.
What happens during a windscreen wiper stalk replacement?
Because the windscreen wiper stalks are usually steering column mounted, they are secured in place behind the steering wheel, which will require its removal. As the steering wheel will contain an airbag, this will need disarming prior to any replacement work.
- The mechanic will test the windscreen wiper stalk for its operation.
- Mechanic will ensure the electrical system is intact (fuses, wiring, bulbs etc).
- If the windscreen wiper stalk is confirmed as the issue, the mechanic will proceed with its replacement.
- Mechanic will disarm the steering wheel airbag, usually by means of either removing the SRS system fuse or by disconnecting the battery.
- The steering wheel airbag will be removed followed by the steering wheel itself
- The wiper stalk is replaced
- Mechanic will then re-assemble the parts and reconnect the SRS (airbag) system
- Mechanic will clear any SRS error codes and test the stalk

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the windscreen wiper stalk doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
