What does a windscreen washer pump do?
The windscreen wiper / washer system enables you to clean your windscreen while driving. The washer fluid assists the window wipers to clean the windscreen of dirt and debris. The washer nozzles that distribute the washer fluid over the windscreen are powered by the washer pump.
How does the windscreen washer pump work and what are the components?
The washer pump is a simple electric fluid pump that, when activated by the driver, pumps the washer fluid through the pipework and then out through the nozzles (or jets) onto the windscreen.
Typical symptoms that require the windscreen washer pump to be replaced.
- When there is no washer fluid coming from the washer nozzles.
- When there is an irregular or poor supply of washer fluid coming through the washer jets.
- If you go to spray the windscreen and cannot hear the pump running to build the pressure.
What happens during a washer pump replacement?
Changing a washer pump is a routine repair for all mechanics and can be done both kerbside as well as in the workshop, providing it is safe to do so.
Whilst there are variations between manufacturers, the basics are pretty similar.
The mechanic will;
- Inspect the windscreen washer system.
- Carry out checks to determine the exact fault in the electrical system.
- Will replace the faulty washer pump if required.

- Test the windscreen's wiper / washer facility to ensure it works correctly.
- Will make adjustments to the washer jet direction if required.

FAQ’s
Can I supply my own parts?
No, we will not fit customer supplied parts unless they are a brand new item, purchased from a dealership with the receipt as proof of purchase. There is no flexibility over this due to insurance and warranty issues.
What happens if the mechanic finds that the washer pump doesn’t require changing and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
