What is headlight lens cleaning?
Headlight lenses are generally made of plastic and are therefore susceptible to scratches, dirt ingress and hazing.
Headlight lens cleaning is done to remove the scratches and dirt, but most frequently to restore the clarity of the lenses. The difference this makes to a headlight can be the difference to passing an MOT or not in some cases. However, obviously having clear lenses enables the headlights to work more effectively when required.
How does headlight lens cleaning work?
Depending on how bad the issue is, the lenses may just need a good polish, either by hand or machine, using a specially prepared cleaning formula or they may even need to be further deep cleaned with fine emery before that happens.
Once the headlight clarity has been restored, the lights are then coated in a special lacquer to prevent the hazing from quickly reoccurring. The “curing” of the lacquer may take 24 hours, so be prepared to be patient before using the vehicle again so as not to damage the coating before it has set.
How do you know your headlight lenses need cleaning?
- You have reduced visibility in dark conditions
- Your headlights are visibly hazy when you look at them - you may not even be able to see the bulbs clearly inside.
- There is visible damage to the lens, such as scratches.
- You either fail the MOT on, or have an advisory about, poor headlight image.
What happens during a headlight lens clean?
- The mechanic will check the condition of the headlight lenses.
- The mechanic may remove the unit or work on them in situ.
- The cleaning may only be a case of polishing them by hand or machine, using a special cleaning formula or in some bad cases of deterioration, they may have to cut back into the lens using fine emery to start with.
- Once cleaned, the mechanic will coat the lenses in a special lacquer to prolong the need to clean them again.

FAQ’s
What happens if the mechanic finds that the headlights do not require cleaning and the problem is due to another issue?
In this scenario, the mechanic will provide a no obligation quote for the correct repair. Should you accept this, the mechanic can alter the booking accordingly. If you decide not to go ahead with the alternative repair, the mechanic can change the booking to a call out and diagnostic booking and charge according to the time spent with the vehicle and call out.
