Towbar FAQ

What brand of towbar will I be getting?

All towbars fitted by ClickMechanic are made in Sheffield by our partners PCT Automotive, one of Europe’s leading towbar designers & manufacturers. All their towbars are ISO9001 registered & CE marked meaning you can use your tow bar all over the continent. All towbars have a unique anti-corrosion coating and the designs have been through a 2 million cycle fatigue test. This is why we’re able to offer a 12-month guarantee on all towbars we fit.

What's the maximum weight I can tow?

The trailer you can tow is largely dependent on when you got your driving licence:

  • If you got your licence after 19th January 2013, you can tow a trailer up to 750kg, or over with a combined car-trailer weight of 3,500kg.
  • If you got your licence between 1st January 1997 & 19th January 2013, you tow a trailer of up to 750kg using a car that weighs up to 3.5 tonnes, or a trailer of over 750kg, as long as the combined weight of car & trailer is under 3.5 tonnes.
  • If you got your licence before 1st January 1997, you are entitled to tow anything up to a combined car-trailer-trailer capacity weight of 8,250kg.

Does the weight I can tow depend on my car?

There are strict limits on the ratio of weight between a car and trailer. For every make and model there is a towing limit given by the manufacturer. Flouting these limits will have obvious effects on fuel efficiency but may also affect your insurance and warranty. Cars have been getting lighter, so be sure to check your car to see what you can tow.

My detachable neck isn’t working…how can I fix it?

Don’t panic, there is a simple fix involving the locking mechanism. Check to see if the towbar is in the locked position, it can slip into this mode when detaching. Many towbars will have a crank or a handle to wind the system back into an unlocked position.

How quickly can I drive with my trailer or caravan?

Speed is a bigger issue when you have more weight, so be sure to stick to these guidelines to stay safe:

  • 30mph on most lit roads (dependent on signage)
  • 50mph on a derestricted single carriageway
  • 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways (prohibited from using right-hand lane on motorways with 3 or more lanes)
