Advice From A Mechanic: How To Get The Best Car Repair Experience

Motorists oftentimes note that dealing with mechanics and garages can feel daunting, navigating technical jargon and getting a fair deal can be a real source of worry and frustration. You’re not alone – we found 1 in 2 car owners feel the same!

To help navigate this process one of ClickMechanic’s top-performing mechanics, Jason of Mouths Motor Company, gives his top 5 tips for handling car repair anxieties, establishing a relationship with a mechanic, and getting a great repair experience:

Check reviews

“I would first suggest looking at the reviews people have left for a mechanic or garage; reviews speak volumes to me! Then, call around a couple of places or check online websites such as ClickMechanic.com to get an instant price.”

“Make sure you get a fully inclusive price including VAT (where applicable). We’ve all been there – I’m sure you’ve gotten a quote from a mechanic and then they add something unexpected like ‘a specialist oil’, or ‘job took longer than expected,” says Jason.

Ask to see replaced parts

If your mechanic has put new parts in, ask to see the replacements and the old parts – if you’re being charged for something, you should be able to see it.

Transparency

Be wary of any mechanic who isn’t being completely transparent. A car expert should be willing to explain what work has been done on your car and show you the work done.

“I often even photograph or video the work or anything that needs to be done so the customer can see it,” says Jason.

Don’t be sold on deals

The feeling of getting a bargain is great, however, if a deal or offer seems too good to be true – then stop and think. “Deals can be tricky,” says Jason. “if something seems too good to be true, it normally is.” It is another reason why transparency is key, expect a clear explanation of what you are getting for the price you’re paying, and how it is going to benefit your vehicle.

Regular car maintenance

Car maintenance costs are a standard part of owning a car, and so you should budget for periodical maintenance to keep your car in tip-top condition. If it is possible, set a fixed amount of money aside on a regular basis, dedicated to covering any surprise repair costs.

With over 20 years of experience in the auto repair industry, Jason joined the ClickMechanic network soon after starting his independent business and is one of the top-performing mechanics on ClickMechanic with a perfect review score of 5 stars.
